OUT MARCH 26TH

"It is clear that Folger has a lot of things to say..."

OSCILLA grew directly from setting and space.  The trio gravitates towards resonant rooms and the Treelawn, an old slovenian workmen’s home turned music venue, delivered the music perfectly.  The historic ballroom, a beautiful nine foot Steinway Model D, and the warm and attentive audience curated the atmosphere.

This music heads in every direction. Vigorous and robustly energetic outpouring sit alongside tender and simple melodies.  Anthony Fuoco, inspired by his instrument for the evening, plays with textures and techniques guided by his longtime collaborator, ECM artist Carmen Castaldi who acts as navigator here, pulling the group along wherever the music flows.  Composer and bandleader Garrett Folger brings a clear, grounded voice to the ensemble, delivering his pieces with poise, conviction, and a deep sense of listening.

"Drawing from avant-garde traditions, the trio builds impressionistic arches across seven Folger originals, all devoid of artificiality...Horizon Trio plays with an optimal sense of space and texture, conquering the ear with crisp, elegant brushstrokes that reflect the musicians’ authentic voices. Both the individual contributions and the collective whole offer something to explore and absorb."

"Horizons often imply a limit, either to our visual perception or, more abstractly, to our individual understanding and experience. From this boundary we generate our knowledge, what we know and what we can know, deducing that which lies beyond our perception, aware of what we cannot fathom. As the azimuth centers us from the horizon to the celestial body, the human miracle of creativity grounds us in the ever constant unknown of our intellect and reason, a limitless pact between humanity and our physical and mental boundaries."
